The Divine Nine is the nickname given to the nine African-American fraternities and sororities that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the umbrella organization for African-American Greek orgs. This was during a time when higher education options for blacks were extremely limited, and the few who had the ability to go Perhaps this is because Howard was the founding place of five out of the nine organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), or, “Divine Nine. The first black college fraternity and sorority were founded in 1906 and 1908, respectively, and six of the nine organizations were founded before 1920. Thus far, it has been successful. They worked tirelessly to ensure that they had the same rights as the other Greek organizations on campus. Ross is the author of five books, including The Divine Nine: The History of African American Fraternities and Sororities (Kensington Books, 2001). Four of the divine nine historically African American fraternities and sororities, now known for their public service activities and step teams, were founded at Howard University in the early 1900s. Thus, in honor of Black History Month, I will share some of the rich history and interesting facts about the multicultural Greek organizations on Purdue's diverse campus. That vitriolic reaction makes me wonder how a transwoman who met the qualifications for membership in any of the Divine Nine sororities, sincerely wanted to not only be a part of that history but pledge, pay dues and do the necessary work would be received. Collier-Thomas said African-American sororities and fraternities were an integral force in the civil rights movement. The Divine Nine are the nine African-American fraternities and sororities. In order for prestigious sororities and fraternities to entertain the masses for UT's annual Stomp Fest during Homecoming on Saturday, they must accept and adhere to the rules and regulations set by the Black Cultural Programming Committee ( BCPC). "Our hope is to have all of the Divine Nine represented for the first time in this event's history." The main goal of the BCPC is to get each chapter of the Divine Nine to participate.
